Catnip (Nepeta cataria) has a long history of use as both a traditional herb and an aromatic plant. It is perhaps best known for its remarkable attraction to cats, caused principally by the naturally occurring compound nepetalactone. Traditionally, the leaves and flowering tops have also been used in herbal preparations and infusions.

Catnip has a fresh, soft herbaceous aroma with a slightly minty character. The hydrolat is gentle and refreshing, making it particularly suitable for skin and scalp care, facial mists and other cosmetic preparations. Catnip is also well known for its natural insect-repellent properties, although the hydrolat is considerably gentler than the concentrated essential oil.

It is a member of the Lamiaceae (mint) family and is an aromatic perennial herb, usually growing to around one metre in height. The softly hairy, grey-green leaves are heart-shaped with serrated edges, while the flowering stems carry clusters of small white to pale pink flowers, often delicately marked with purple spots. The plant is highly aromatic when the foliage is bruised.

Other floral waters available include Chamomile, Lavender, Rose Otto, Frankincense, Peppermint, Rosemary, Neroli and Bay.

Best kept refrigerated after opening & used within 2 months.
